SYNOPSIS

Jimmy Shannon learns he will inherit seven million dollars if he marries by 7:00 PM on his twenty-seventh birthday, which happens to be today. After his girlfriend refuses his clumsy proposal, he desperately asks seven other women, leading to a newspaper ad that attracts hundreds of would-be brides. Buster Keaton’s comedy culminates in a legendary chase where he flees an avalanche of rocks and angry women, showcasing his unparalleled physical genius and timing.

CRITIQUE

Buster Keaton’s Seven Chances contains perhaps the most spectacular chase in silent comedy. What begins as a situational farce explodes into a surreal, kinetic climax as hundreds of brides—and an avalanche of boulders—pursue the hero. It exemplifies Keaton’s geometric precision and his ability to escalate a gag to epic proportions. The rock slide sequence, improvised on set, showcases his fearlessness and physical genius. It remains a masterclass in pacing and stunt work, proving that physical comedy could be as thrilling and dangerous as an action movie.
