MOTHER

Vsevolod Pudovkin

Mother

SYNOPSIS

Set during the failed Russian Revolution of 1905, the film follows Pelageya, a timid factory worker’s wife whose son Pavel joins the revolutionary movement. Initially fearful and compliant, she betrays him under pressure from the authorities. As repression intensifies and Pavel is imprisoned, the mother awakens to political consciousness. Her private grief transforms into public resolve, leading her to embrace the cause that endangers them both.

CRITIQUE

A landmark of Soviet montage, Mother exemplifies Pudovkin’s theory of constructive editing, shaping emotion through rhythmic juxtaposition rather than theatrical performance. The transformation of the mother becomes an allegory of political awakening, rendered with visual metaphors drawn from nature and machinery. While its ideological thrust is unmistakable, the film achieves genuine pathos, balancing revolutionary fervor with intimate psychological detail and formal rigor.
