CRITIQUE
A defining work of late silent cinema, the film endures largely through the charged presence of Greta Garbo and the magnetic rapport she shares with John Gilbert. Clarence Brown frames desire as both romantic ideal and corrosive force, using soft focus and expressive lighting to heighten sensual tension. Beneath its melodramatic surface lies a study of masculine friendship undone by erotic obsession, revealing the era’s fascination with fatal femininity and moral fragility.
